The concrete foundations at PDO's Runib Switchyard were experiencing visible cracking, spalling, and delamination. The structures were over twenty years old, with repairs made in 2002 - some of which had already failed again. The main threat to the structural integrity of buildings in this region lies in the highly saline soil and shallow groundwater. The prevalence of Sabkha in the Gulf region introduces highly corrosive mineral deposits in the soil with salinity levels exceeding three times that in seawater.

A new Cortec® customer needed to store equipment for one year, on the deck of an offshore platform. Exposure to salt water spray, sand, shot blasting operations, among other corrosive elements, made this an interesting challenge. An effective method of corrosion protection during this storage period was needed. Additionally, the customer required a solution that was safe and easy to apply for storage at their remote location.

The customer needed to prevent the progession of corrosion to the interior of 60 pipes during several years of storage, as a back up for LNG gas pipeline in a harsh outdoor environment. The pipes would be exposed to high humidity, salt air, and high winds. Protection was required for the interior surface of the pipes, as the exterior would be protected by cement.

GASCO had a large number of spare heat exchanger (HE) tube bundles and rotors in their warehouses. The HE bundles and rotors were being protected in canisters pressurized with nitrogen. They had a challenge maintaining nitrogen pressure, which requires diligent routine inspection. Also, long-term corrosion protection using nitrogen was proving not as effective as needed.

Kellogg's Brown & Root (KBR) fabricated 27 gas to liquid modules at Gulf Piping Company in Abu Dhabi for Escravos, Nigeria. After completion, the fabricated platforms were transported to Nigeria. KBR was required to protect all platforms from corrosion for up to two years as they would stand idle before being commissioned into operation. KBR's original plan was for costly de-humidification and an ineffective nitrogen purging system.

The customer is one of the leading natural gas processing companies in Dubai. Dubai Petroleum supplied the feed for the plant until 2011 when they stopped supplying feed for various reasons, which lead to the customer shutting down for an indefinite period. The Kanoo Group discussed with the customer the possibilities of corrosion occurrences while the plant is down. A series of presentations were made and they offered the customer a turnkey mothballing solution for long-term corrosion protection.

Cortec's MCI® 2005 was incorporated in the concrete mix design for the podium structure to achieve the desired 100 year service life. The building sits on a concrete and steel podium with 192 piles descending to a depth of more than 50 meters. A total of 45,000 m3 of concrete was used in the foundations with a weight in excess of 110,000 tonnes.

Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO) is a major producer of oil and gas from the offshore areas of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. ADMA-OPCO operates multiple barge-type offshore platforms constructed on caisson legs. Previously, internals of the platform caisson legs were left uncoated and filled with biocide-treated water and protected using suspended sacrificial anodes. Over time the anodes depleted and an alternative environmentally friendly method of protecting caisson legs was recommended.
